Olfaction satisfaction

I have woken this morning to the smell of freshly baked bread coming from the house of my earth mother neighbour.  It took me a second to understand what had woken me and why I was salivating. I will certainly detour via the local bakery and pick up a couple of nice warm rolls on my way to work. I might even stop for an espresso so I can drink in that aroma as well this morning.

Another of my favourite smells is newly cut grass on a summer afternoon. The noise of suburban lawnmowers in symphony can get tedious but the smell that later pervades the neighbourhood makes it all worthwhile.

In winter I always have fresh oranges, grapefruit and lemons in bowls in the kitchen and living area. I think the smell is the best air freshener of all during a damp winter.

What rocks your olfactory sense? What doesn’t?

  1. It's funny you mention freshly mowed lawns because I just finished mowing ours and that smell of newly cut grass stays with me for a few days.
    I love it!

  2. Bob that smell is with you because you have a clump of grass stuck to the bottom of your shoe.
I love the smell of clothes that have dried in the sun. Cucumbers and watermelons too though not together, both refresh me.

  3. I'm a HUGE fan of the olfactory sense. The feel of the warm sun on my face....the soft summer breeze in June. Love, love, LOVE the smell of fresh-baked bread....(thank you, Cuisinart) and cinnamon buns. I leave the windows open every chance I get....just love the smell of the fresh air. It beats perfume's butt.

  4. My favorite scents are the smell of rain and ozone, before a storm arrives - and the scent of fallen leaves and earth in the Fall.

And when I smell a ripe pear, it reminds me of the farm I grew up on where my cousins and I would climb the pear trees and squish the over-ripe fallen ones with our feet as we chased each other around the orchard.

  5. Thunderstorms and freshly cut grass...they always bring to mind my home state of Florida. As I write this, we are about to get a thunderstorm and I can feel the negative ions building.

  6. Well I guess I make three with rain storms - especially after a long dry spell (rare here in Vancouver).
I love the smell of fresh coffee (just don't like the taste) baked goods and fried onions - not necessarily together.
