What’s in a name?

  • Major
  • 4real
  • Talula does the hula from Hawaii Baby
  • Bishop
  • Spiral Cicada
  • Cinderella
  • Duke

What do these have in common?

An attempt has been made to register all of these given names. Most though have been disallowed by the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs (Birth, Deaths and Marriages).

I can’t believe some of the names that idiotic parents want to saddle their offspring with - life is hard enough for goodness sake.

The New Zealand Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages Brian Clarke  said names can be declined for registration if they may cause offence to a reasonable person, are unreasonably long (generally more than 100 characters) or resemble an official title or rank.  Names using numerals will also be declined.

The applicant can have a negative decision reviewed by the Courts if they’re determined.

Do you agree with the sort of guidelines as above or so should we be allowed to name our children whatever we want? What are the rules in your country?

  1. If anybody had named me 4real, i fear i would have gotten real on his ass about the age of four, at least twice.

  2. I don't think we have such rules here. I think you can name your child whatever you want.
    Moon Unit Zappa, anyone?
And Penn, of Penn and Tellr, or was it Teller of Penn and Teller, named his daughter Moxie Crimefighter.
    Nice parents!

  3. Those sound like reasonable guidelines. My last name is "Heidt" pronounced the same way as 'height'. I always tease Jamie that if he had been a girl we would have named him Heidi. I wouldn't have, but it sounds funny together. Heidi Heidt. Yeah. lol. Hugs.

  4. Punch, are you 4real?

Pretty sure we haven't any rules here, judging from some names I've run into...such as, the guy in Tennessee who named his children, Adolph Hitler, and Aryan Nation. We don't need a law against it, but possibly we should sterilize these people.

  5. Back in the 70's when the hippie movement was still going strong in Vancouver, B.C. my brother in laws neighbours were calling their daughter in from the back yard. "Morning Dew" they called "Morning Dew come on in now". About 5 years ago the Vancouver Sun newspaper did a story about the now adults with these kinds of names. Good old Morning Dew was interviewed but I don't remember what she was doing now or if she changed her name to something more current like Talulah or Apple.

  6. Agree on this one, some parents well, just shouldn't be parents. You have to wonder how they would feel if someone changed their name and forced them to live with a ridiculous name. Or worse, something like George or Agnes. Can't see them liking that too much.

  7. I think any name that has numbers in it should never, ever be allowed.

  8. Punch; lol, I can imagine. I'd be the same.

Bob: What a handle to hang on a child. Awful.

Xanadu: I bet he's glad he turned out male :-)

jadedj: I agree that a new law would be overkill, NZ can be rather heavy handed with adding unnecessary laws.

    DuPree: I agree. Totally.

Lori: At least 'Morning Dew' is kind of pretty but I can only imagine the fun kids would have torturing someone with a name like that.

DD: I think these parents must think they're doing something great by giving their kids a point of difference - just didn't fully think it through.

    TP: Totally agree.
