News from the shaky isles

It feels surreal that the beautiful city of Christchurch (about 1,300 kilometres south of me) has taken another hammering only five months after the last massive quake. This time the effect is much worse even though this quake was smaller - there's loss of life because it happened at lunchtime on a working day and the epicentre was very close to the city and only 5 kilometres deep. Aftershocks are happening every few minutes, some of them quite significant so more damage is occurring all the time. It must be terrifying; I have experienced earthquakes but nothing like this.

Please spare a thought for the rescue effort that is ongoing.

I posted a while back when I was visiting Christchurch, see here for a photo of the central city Anglican cathedral as it looked then. See link here for a current view or here for today's shots of around the city centre.

The power of nature is mind boggling.

  2. From across the ditch I am watching with much emotion and concern. We feel for you, and for the people of Christchurch. I have spent some lovely hours in Christchurch on more than one occasion.

  4. So, so glad you're ok, but feeling sad for those further south.

  5. Lou, it is good to hear from you! Very happy to see you are okay. I knew you were further away from the quakes, but I though you said you went there sometimes and didn't remember how often. Out thoughts are with you and those dealing with the aftermath of the quakes in the south. Take care.

  6. There's been a lot about your shake in our news, despite being about as far away you can go. I guess that human fragility to the powers of nature has us all scared wherever we are.
My thoughts are with anyone involved in this catastrophe.

    Love
    Daniel

  7. Thanks everyone. It looks like most have now been pulled from the rubble; we have 71 identified dead and an unspecified number still to be identified. 80% of the city is without power, water and sewerage so it's a big job trying to put things back together. In a tiny country like NZ there's no separation from an event like this, we all feel like we're involved.

  8. I'm so glad to hear that you and your son are okay! I've contacted several people in attempts to figure out a way to contact you...I've just been really worried.

I'm very relieved that you and your family are okay!

  9. Thanks Scott, I appreciate your concern. Me and mine are fine though there were anxious moments until my cousin and two old friends made contact to let everyone know they were OK.

  10. phew! glad you're ok. And I hope there are no more big after shocks. Earthquakes are scary. We even had one a couple of weeks ago in Germany... only 4,4 but we NEVER have them here!

  11. I haven't been over here in a while, Lou, but I sure have been thinking of you the past few days. I'm glad to find that you are still about. All of you are in many of our minds here.
