I'm scared of the air bag inside my steering wheel.
I've heard people say that if you have your thumbs on the bit of plastic that is the air bag cover in the centre of the wheel, and the bag is activated, it can seriously break your thumbs. It really worries me that I'm going to get more hurt by the bag activating than I might be from the actual crash.
Is it just me?
Don't worry. I've been in an accident when the airbag went off. My thumbs are still intact, as is the rest of me. For me, the problem was that it is a controlled explosion that releases the airbag so, immediately after it has gone off, there's a smell of fumes. I was convinced the car was going to blow up so was ordering my children out onto a busy road rather than get fried in the car. The latter, I'm glad to say, didn't happen. I'd sure rather have an airbag than not.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't think it's "just" you, but it isn't me.
ReplyDeleteI have my own weird phobias, which I will keep to myself.....for now.
Not alone but I do my best to not think about it. Although going out today for the first time in a week I am sure its all I am going to think about *winks*
ReplyDeleteI pretty sure "Mythbusters" proved that to be a false myth. Of course, the best is to avoid the accident in the first place but sometimes you can't be that picky right?
ReplyDeleteI'd say; don't be scared of the airbag! Be thankful.
Maybe you should consider constantly wearing ear defenders to protect you from the deafening explosion/releasing instead? Just a thought ;) (joke!!)

I had one go off after I had been hit head on. I probably saved my life. A friend had a very serious accident and the air bag saved him but slammed his left hand into the driver side window and broke all the bones in his hand. He said he had his left hand at about one o'clock on the wheel. I still would want to have it. broken hands can be fixed.
ReplyDeleteMy nephew is one of the main safety coordinators working for a glass company dealing with windshields and consequently the air bags that are activated in an accident.
ReplyDeleteHe travels all over the world for his work (he has been down your way) and he tells me to never have your hands on the front of the steering wheel. Unlike the old "2 and 10 o'clock" positions that they used to pitch to us.
You will likely also get friction burns. Still better than the alternative.
